I wouldn't think the Lexan or whatever they used would have the rigidity and environmental durability to handle that job safely... not to mention how much that would have to weigh.

Those aren't load and tension components and they are shaped. The curve gives them most of the strength... they also aren't expected to catch a 3,200 lb vehicle ;) I don't think I want to be the guy who tests throwing that car into a corner at 60 MPH.
